Hi, I’m Mark. I have been working in operational management and senior HR roles for over twenty years. I have managed large teams of direct/indirect employees and subject matter experts both as an operational manager and, for many years, as an HR and employment law professional. I have worked across the UK and internationally delivering highly challenging roles and projects.
I have worked in operational management, senior HRBP, Head of HR, HR Director and consultancy roles for many prominent organisations including: Compass, Wickes, Veolia, Xchanging and Royal Mail Group. I have provided strategic HR support to headcounts of up to 7,000, managed budgets of up to £14 million and advised extensively at executive board level.
I have received a number of prestigious awards during my career. In 2006 I received a Certificate of Individual Achievement from Henri Proglio, Chairman and CEO of Veolia at The Law Society in London. I was also winner of the Interserve Divisional People Development Award in 2011 after successfully delivering a broad spectrum of strategic organisational development projects that generated significant commercial results.
There is very little that I haven’t dealt with from an HR or employment law perspective and I firmly believe that my work must deliver clear commercial benefits. The numerous employers and clients I work with are always delighted with the immediate and significant value that I bring to their businesses.
In terms of professional qualifications I successfully completed a BA (Hons) in History at the University of Central Lancashire in 1999 and a Masters degree (MA) in HR and Employment Law at the Russell Group University of Leeds in 2005. I then qualified as a HR Practitioner at the University of Huddersfield in 2006 where I became a Certified Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). After a further six years working in senior HR roles I subsequently became a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD in 2011 (CFCIPD). I am PRINCE2 qualified at both foundation and practitioner level, NEBOSH level 3 qualified and a fully qualified DISC psychometric practitioner. I hold a Group Training Certificate from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Associate Membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (AIIRSM) and Technician Membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Tech IOSH).
In 2012 I became an independent HR Consultant and Project Director. This led to the creation of Reach Higher Human Resources™, a concept that I developed in to a limited company and a business that now enjoys a proven track record of successful project delivery and client satisfaction.
In 2015 I began my complementary career as a Lecturer in Reward Management, Pay Structures, Performance Management and Employee Motivation at Bradford University School of Management. In 2016 I was subsequently invited to become a Lecturer in Employment Law to MSc postgraduates at Loughborough University, where I was Course Leader at the School of Business and Economics. Loughborough is consistently rated as a top five university in the UK, the top university in the Midlands of England and the leading sports university worldwide. I designed, wrote and then developed this fully CIPD accredited course as a new subject at the university and experienced a threefold increase in student numbers during the first three years of delivery.
In 2019 I successfully completed a Certificate in Academic Practice at Loughborough University and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). In 2019 I also joined Leeds University Business School as a Postgraduate Lecturer in Human Resource Management, Management Consulting and People Analytics. These subjects are taught at Masters level with the latter forming part of the university’s CIPD accredited MA in Human Resource Management. The University of Leeds is rated as the number one university in the North of England and consistently ranks as one of the most prestigious universities both in Europe and worldwide. In 2020 I became a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI). I also began learning Mandarin Chinese with the Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds.
In my spare time I like taking long walks with my Dachshund and I enjoy watching football and cricket now that my playing days are well behind me. I am a keen writer and regular blogger. In addition to publishing my work via RHHR™ my articles have also been published by Loughborough University and the University of Leeds. As a classically trained pianist I won various competitions and performed in public when I was younger. I enjoy learning foreign languages and speak French well, German reasonably and Mandarin Chinese to a rudimentary level. Information technology is very important to me and I have used cloud based solutions professionally for many years. I have also designed, developed and launched five successful websites, including this one. I am an avid reader, competent amateur gardener and I particularly enjoy spending time with my family.
Our Experts | Claire Butterick
Hi, I’m Claire. I have worked for a number of well known employers including Cadbury, the University of Stirling and Age UK. Many of the positions I have undertaken have had a strong focus on business development and operational compliance. Experience which is vitally important to the work I now do for Reach Higher Human Resources™.
My role at Reach Higher Human Resources™ is varied and always very interesting! I manage most of our financial and marketing activity including maintaining our website and social media platforms. I am generally the first point of contact for potential and current clients. This includes telephone, email and webchat relationship management. I provide HR-related advice and other specialist services such as drafting contracts of employment and policies. I also provide dedicated project and case management support in relation to complex HR and employee relations matters. For example assisting with whistleblowing, disciplinary, grievance and absence issues, to name just a few examples.
In terms of professional qualifications I successfully completed a BA (Hons) in Human Geography at the University of Hull in 1999. In 2016 I subsequently won a scholarship to study the internationally renowned Masters degree (MA) in Human Resource Management at the Russell Group University of Leeds. I successfully completed this degree and acheived a distinction. I also became both level 7 accredited and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). My thesis research looked at the experiences of women returning to work following childbirth. My research identified complex HR and employment law issues affecting both employers and employees in the modern workplace.
In addition to academic qualifications I hold a myriad of operational and vocational training qualifications. For example I attained a certificate in Managing Safely from the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Future Learn and Dementia Research certificates from the Universities of Birmingham, Newcastle and Tasmania. I have also successfully completed numerous internal training courses that have given me a broad spectrum of valuable transferable skills.
In addition to my work at Reach Higher Human Resources™ I recently completed a two year, part-time project on behalf of Age UK. In my capacity as project manager I developed an innovative befriending programme specifically designed for people living with dementia. I developed the project from a concept to full implementation. In addition to working as a trusted partner with operational and budgetary responsbilities, I also managed client relationships, a large team of volunteers and complex relationship dynamics with both families and other third party stakeholders. My knowledge of both business and HR best practice was extremely useful in delivering this highly rewarding work and feedback received from clients, their families and other external organisations was extremely positive.
In my spare time I particularly enjoy quizzes and reading. In the recent past I have also developed, to my own surprise, a love of snooker and darts. In terms of the former I have been to World Championship finals in Sheffield. Much to the surprise of my large family, with whom I also love to spend as much time as possible.
